People have different definitions for the terms God Moding and Power Playing. This thread is simply to let you know what Rattus defines these terms as. Please do not PM staff saying things like "This isn't how it is on such-and-such!"
God Moding. (God Modding, God Mode) Giving your character "God"-like powers. Making them the strongest, fastest, best character around. These characters have very few, if any, weaknesses, but many many strengths.
They are rarely, if ever, hurt in fights, even if it's obvious that they should have been.
It's entirely okay to have your character think they are the best ever, but it's entirely not okay to state that they are.
Example:
Axel was the strongest, smartest, most attractive rat to ever scurry through the city's sewers. Nothing could ever hurt him.
Instead of bluntly stating that Axel is the best thing since sliced bread and toasters, a better post would be:
Axel believed himself to be the strongest, smartest, most attractive rat to ever scurry through the city's sewers. He believed he was invincible and acted like nothing could hurt him.
Another form of God Moding is when a player uses things their character could not possibly know against another character. Usually OOC information. But it could also cover knowing another character's thoughts without them saying them aloud.
Example:
News of Jax's death had not yet spread through the sewers. Only Ash and his family knew, and they had decided to withhold the information until the next morning. "I really miss Jax," thought Ash.
Suddenly Axel appeared around the corner. He looked at Ash with sorrow in his eyes. "I'm really sorry for your loss, Ash. I know you must really miss Jax," he mumbled.
Assuming Axel isn't apart of Jax's family, there's no way he could have known about the death. Axel used the information he gained from Ash's post and thoughts to God Mod.
Power Playing. Stating the outcome of your actions against another player's character, without giving them the chance to accept, defend themselves or react.
Example:
Jax lunged at Axel, sinking his razor sharp teeth into his flank. Jax violently shook his head, ripping away the flesh.
In the example, Jax is stating the outcome of his actions against Axel. Jax can describe his own actions, but he cannot force Axel to be wounded by them. It's up to Axel whether or not he "accepts" the attack. A better post would be something like this:
Jax lunged at Axel, aiming for his flank, in hopes to sink his razor sharp teeth into his flesh.
Axel is given the chance to accept the attack and/or wounds.
A possible response by Axel would be:
Axel scurried forward as Jax's lunged for his flank. His teeth barely misses their target, as they clamped down on Axel's tail, breaking the flesh and bone.
Another form of Power Playing is when you taking total control of another player's character.
Example:
Jax lunged at Axel, aiming for his flank, in hopes to sink his razor sharp teeth into his flesh.
Ash cheered Axel on as she saw him jump out of Jax's reach, and Jax tumbled headlong into a bush.
In the example, Ash is dictating both Jax's and Axel's actions without giving Axel a chance to accept or dodge Jax's attack. And by making Jax tumble into a bush without Jax's approval or saying that he did. A better post would be something like this:
Ash yelled for Axel to jump out of Jax's reach as she watched Jax lunge for his flank.
Ash isn't dictating either characters' action, instead she is describing her own actions and what she hopes the outcome will be.
Thank you for taking the time to read Rattus' God Moding and Power Playing Guide and bearing with the not-so-great examples. Hopefully this helps you better understand what Rattus' defines both as. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
